My name is Jordan and I am a type one diabetic. I have been living with Diabetes since August of 2006. For those of you who don't know what that is...Diabetes is the name given to disorders in which the body has trouble regulating blood sugar levels. There are two major type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, its system for protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any foreign substances.Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys certain cells in the pancreas, an organ about the size of a hand that is located behind the lower part of the stomach. These cells, called beta cells,are contained along with other types of cells. Beta cells produce insulin,a hormone that helps the body move the glucose contained in food into cells throughout the body, which use it for energy. But when the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin can be produced, and the glucose stays in the blood instead.(this makes the blood levels go up) People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin in order to live. This means undergoing multiple injections daily, or having insulin delivered through an insulin pump(I personally recommend the insulin pump because of all the freedom that comes with it, sure it can be expensive but I think its better than taking 3 shots a day and having to eat at the almost exact same time every day). People with diabetes must also regulate their food intake and their exercise so that the blood glucose does not go severely high or low. Either can be life threatening.
I guess this is a message to just not give up on yourself. Keep trying... trust me I have thought of just stopping it all and giving up but I talked myself out of it. So the whole point of this website is to not to just give up. I'm a teenager living with this problem and I realize that they're are younger children living with this too. You have your whole life to live up to.
The J.D.R.F. (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) are searching day and night over and over for a cure and I believe in them. Even if they come up with a cure to prevent it before I die than I will still die knowing that they tried, that's all I care about.
